Football journalist, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Chelsea’s interest in signing Victor Osimhen, amid reports that the Blues are about to seal an agreement with Napoli for the player.

Chelsea are clearly in need of a proven number nine, with both Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja not showing they can deliver enough for the team so far in this season.

Osimhen and Ivan Toney are the two major targets that have been linked with Chelsea the most, but the Nigerian has looked the most likely to be signed, especially given his obvious admiration for the club.

Chelsea’s interest in Osimhen however became complicated late in December when it was confirmed that the 25-year-old had signed a contract extension with Napoli, making it very difficult for him to leave the Serie A champions this month.

Some outlets have claimed that the Blues are working on sealing an Nkunku-type agreement with the Italian club, which would see them agree on a move that will only be completed later in the summer, but Romano has now put the reports to bed by insisting that there is no truth to those stories.

Taking to YouTube, the journalist said: “No pre agreement with Napoli or player side for Victor Osimhen has happened this month, I don’t know where these rumours are coming from but I would say at this point makes no sense.”

Osimhen is currently representing his country at the ongoing AFCON, and was on target for Nigeria, as they drew 1-1 in their opening game with Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
