Graeme Souness has claimed that Chelsea do not have any real leaders in their current squad.

The Liverpool icon made this known as he spoke about Conor Gallagher after the 1-0 won against Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Gallagher started the game for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and was very influential in the middle, alongside Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

The 23-year-old also came close to scoring in the second half when he fired a shot towards Bernd Leno’s goal with the outside of his right foot, but it ended up hitting the post.

In his post-match reaction via Daily Mail, Souness said he was a fan of Gallagher, before he went on to add that he didn’t think the Chelsea star had the qualities of a leader.

He said: “It looks to me like they don’t have any real leaders. Connor Gallagher has been captain on some occasions and when you watch him play, there’s nothing to dislike. Good technically. Good athlete. Tremendous attitude. But is there that presence in the dressing room and beyond where others would be seeing him as their leader?”

Gallagher has captained Chelsea many times this season due to the injuries that Reece James and Ben Chilwell suffered at the start of the season. And while we can’t say he’s anything like John Terry or Frank Lampard, he has definitely shown dedication and commitment to the team, which we believe to be very important qualities for a leader.

People like Souness also seem to forget that the current Chelsea squad is mostly made up of very young players, who haven’t even gotten up to 25 years old. Gallagher may not be the finished product just yet, but he certainly has what it takes to become one.
