Former Chelsea man, Wayne Bridge cannot believe that the Blues are still in need of a left-back despite the amount of money the club has spent to bring in players since the Todd Boehly era started.
Chelsea currently have two top left-backs in Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella, but the pair haven’t played much this season because of injuries.
Mauricio Pochettino has been forced to deploy Levi Colwill, who is originally a centre back, as a left-back, and the 20-year-old has struggled a lot in that position – most-recently during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Middlesbrough.
According to Bridge, the situation is one that he finds very hard to believe, and it suggests that the recruitment team at Stamford Bridge don’t know what they’re doing.
“It’s crazy really, when you look at the money they have spent, that they need to get another left back,” Bridge told The Mirror.
“Colwill is good but he’s more of a centre back and he’s not going to overlap a lot. And it didn’t go too well on Tuesday night. They’d rather Lewis Hall or [Tino] Livramento back now. It is crazy when you talk about the names and they don’t have a left back. It’s madness.”
Chilwell has already returned to full team training, and is expected back in Pochettino’s squad soon, but the same cannot be said about Cucurella, who could be out for another few weeks.
