He could probably beat 99.9 percent on the planet – Former Blue questions Chelsea’s decision to spend £88m on this player

Craig Burley has criticised Mykhailo Mudryk for his inconsistencies at Chelsea.

The Blues forked out a whopping £88m to buy the 23-year-old from Ukrainian club, Shakhtar Donetsk last year. And while he has shown glimpses of the form that made them pay that amount for his services, there haven’t been enough to show he’s actually worth it.

Mudryk was involved for the Blues in the second half, as Chelsea fell to a 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final loss against Middlesbrough on Tuesday, but he could barely influence the game in any way.

The winger has certainly had some joy on occasions this season, with four goals and two assists from 21 games, but Burley isn’t satisfied with his performances just yet.

“£88 million for Mykhailo Mudryk? He can’t cross the ball,” he told ESPN FC after Chelsea’s loss to Middlesbrough.

“Yes, he can run — he could probably beat 99.9 per cent on the planet over a 100 metres [race].

“But there’s a little white round thing that rolls around that you’ve got to hit at some point.”

To be fair to Mudryk, the bulk of the Chelsea team have not been very impressive at all this season, and his form could be a reflection of the club as a whole. He certainly wasn’t doing badly before he moved to Stamford Bridge last January, and there’s still plenty of hope that under the right conditions, the player Chelsea paid so much for will come to life again.

Only time can tell!
