Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash.

The Blues went into the game as favourites at the Riverside Stadium. However, it was Boro who looked the more determined of both sides, defending well, and breaking away on the counterattack whenever they got the chance.

The constant pressure from Michael Carrick’s men paid off after 37 first half minutes when Hayden Hackney found the net for them through a stunning counterattack.

The Blues laboured to find a way back into the game, with Cole Palmer particularly missing four very good opportunities to score in the first half.

Chelsea failed to break down Boro in the second-half at the Riverside, as the home team held on to claim the win and go into the second leg at Stamford Bridge with a one-goal advantage.
