Pundit says Ross Barkley was better than Chelsea’s £100m signing

Ex-Manchester United midfielder, Owen Hargreaves has claimed that Ross Barkley was the main man in midfield today, as Chelsea beat Luton 3-2 away from home.

Barkley, who spent four years with Chelsea after moving to Stamford Bridge from Everton back in 2018, has been playing for Luton since this summer.

The 30-year-old was again, the key man for the Hatters, and deservedly got a goal for them, as they rallied to comeback from 3-0 down against the Blues.

Meanwhile, Chelsea had Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher at the heart of their own midfield, but Hargreaves thinks the pair were outplayed by Barkley, who cost Luton nothing when they signed him.

“Ross was the best midfield player on the pitch,” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions after Chelsea’s win over Luton.

“They’ve got £100 million players out there and the kid they [Luton] got on a free transfer was exceptional today.”

Barkley was brought in to provide some more options in Chelsea’s midfield under Maurizio Sarri, but he never quite got to shine in the colours of the club.

The Englishman secured a permanent move to Nice in France from Chelsea last year, after spending a season on loan with Aston Villa during the 2021-22 campaign.
