Football pundit and former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has shared his thoughts on how Levi Colwill is currently being used at Chelsea.
Colwill was a subject of transfer speculation over the summer, with both Brighton and Liverpool eager to sign the 20-year-old after the spectacular 2022-23 season he had at the Amex Stadium. However, Mauricio Pochettino opted to keep the highly-rated centre back.
This season, Colwill has been an integral part of Chelsea under the Argentine, with the defender mostly playing as a left-back to provide cover for the injured Ben Chilwell and also Marc Cucurella.
Colwill has come in for some criticism for his performance in Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Crystal Palace on Wednesday after being caught out for Michael Olise’s goal, with Burley the latest to comment on his error in the game.
Speaking on ESPN after the midweek clash, Burley shared that he thought Colwill hasn’t done well as a fullback while recalling his error against Roy Hodgson’s men.
He said: “Colwill’s a centre-half playing left-back. A centre-half who could go on to have a very good career, he’s a pretty good player, but I think you see him defending the back post it wasn’t great… It’s different defending the back post as a full-back than it is as a centre-half.”
To shed light on how poor Colwill was against Palace, the England international even had to be subbed off at half-time, and that wasn’t the first time this season.
