Former Chelsea defender, Mario Melchiot has recalled a conversation he had with Malo Gusto earlier this season.
Gusto is one of the most interesting players currently at Stamford Bridge, and the 20-year-old put in a memorable display, as Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Wednesday.
The Frenchman, who started the game as a right-back, finished it as a left-back, and did well in both positions. He also picked up an assist after squaring the ball that led to Mykhailo Mudryk’s opener for Chelsea.
While speaking on ESPN recently, Melchiot revealed that he has previously been told by Gusto that he doesn’t care what position he plays in, as long as he gets to help the team, and he proved it on Wednesday night.
“You just don’t want a 1v1 of Colwill against Olise… When he put Malo Gusto against him, it was a different game. I think Malo Gusto had a good game. He set up the first goal and the kid could handle both sides [of the pitch],” Melchiot said.
“I had a quick chat with him in pre-season and he said left or right didn’t matter to him. He literally showed it today.”
An in-form Reece James is arguably the best right-back in the world, but with a player like Gusto available to deputise for the England international, Chelsea fans and Mauricio Pochettino will certainly feel very assured about their team’s chances.
