Sky Sports pundit and former Chelsea women’s player Karen Carney has ripped into Chelsea and their strikers for their persistent problems in front of goal.
The Blues suffered yet another loss on the road when they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Wolves on Sunday. It was a fourth consecutive away loss for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who could have easily picked up the three points if they were more clinical.
Chelsea created a host of chances, and perhaps, the best of them came in the first half when Sterling ran through on the Wolves goal with no one else, but Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson to his right. However, instead of squaring the ball to one of his teammates to finish into an empty post, the 28-year-old elected to fire a shot himself, which was saved by José Sa’.
The home side ended up scoring two second-half goals through Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty to win the game, despite a late consolation effort by Christopher Nkunku.
“Sterling has to either take it around him [Sa] or square it,” Carney told Sky Sports.
“He has to score, though. Honestly, you spend a billion pounds on transfers and all you want for Christmas is a centre forward.”
She then added: “The connections are there but perhaps they’re too fluid.
“They have to be doing better in the 18-yard box. It’s not been good enough.”
