Mauricio Pochettino has admitted he was quite pleased with the contribution of Christopher Nkunku during Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Wolves on Sunday.

Nkunku came off the bench after 60 minutes to help Chelsea salvage something from the game, while they trailed 1-0.

The Frenchman did indeed provide arguably Chelsea’s best moment of the encounter when he got on the end of a fine cross from Raheem Sterling to head into José Sa’s post in added time.

Chelsea couldn’t get their equaliser in the end, and are now in danger of completely missing out on a place in Europe next season, but Pochettino says he was happy with what he saw from Nkunku.

“I’m very pleased to see Nkunku score and it shows how important he can be for us,” the Argentine said in a post-match interview.

“We cannot put too much pressure on him, he’s been out for a very long time and that is why he came on after 60 minutes – to help ease him in.

“He’s a quality player who can score goals and we are pleased he did that today, although of course we are disappointed not to win the game.

“Christo needs time to arrive in this way but we are very confident in him to get to his best and be a key player for us.”
