West Ham forward, Michail Antonio, and Newcastle United striker, Callum Wilson have applauded the good gesture that was put out by Mykhailo Mudryk after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win against the Magpies on Tuesday.

Mudryk came off the bench to equalise late in the game for Chelsea, who had been trailing Newcastle 1-0 since the first half.

The strike proved important too, as it ensured that the game went straight to a penalty shootout, which Chelsea ended up winning 4-2.

Mudryk’s goal, like Wilson’s, was a product of error, which came after Kieran Trippier poor control of the ball in the Newcastle box.

The right-back had tried to head Malo Gusto’s cross back to his goalkeeper, but it fell short of the measured distance, leaving room for Mudryk to pounce and send it into the back of the net.

After the game, the Chelsea winger reached out to Trippier on Instagram, urging him to forget what happened, and try to keep his head up— a gesture that both Antonio and Wilson believe is rare in football today.

Speaking on The Players Channel podcast, Antonio said: “Trippier made the mistake for the goal and he has put out a tweet at him and saying ‘it is football, it happens to everybody but it’s a part of the game’, keep you head up. Have you spoken to Tripps about it? That’s big! I don’t think that has ever happened in football. That is something fresh and new.

Wilson responded: “Not from the opposition either. You might get it from an international teammate or a teammate or a friend but from the opposition and the person who capitalised on it, it’s respect really. I guess it’s fair play to him. That was a nice touch, he didn’t have to do it, they have won the game. It’s fantastic to see.”
