Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Redknapp has revealed that Chelsea are lacking a proper number nine, and recommended that the Blues make a move for Brentford striker, Ivan Toney.
The comments came after Chelsea’s Carabao Cup quarter-final win against Newcastle United on Tuesday.
It was a difficult game for the Blues, who struggled to break down Newcastle’s stubborn defence despite their superior ball possession for large parts of the game, and had to rely on an error from Kieran Trippier to equalise through Mykhailo Mudryk.
Chelsea were however a lot better in the ensuing penalty shootout, winning it 4-2, thanks to a stunning save by Djordje Petrovic.
While reflecting on the match later on Sky Sports, Redknapp pointed out that Chelsea don’t look like a club that have spent over £1b on transfers, and called for them to sign a striker.
He said: “There are still more questions than answers when I watch Chelsea at the moment. I look at that squad and they have spent a billion pounds and still don’t have a number nine. I can’t take Chelsea seriously until they do. They are missing something so big in that area.
“They have these wide players, but they need a number nine, they need someone who can put the ball in the back of the net and until they do I think they are going to struggle.
“They are hard to find. If you look at strikers out there, Ivan Toney is obviously one you are going to go for, but how much is he going to cost? There’s not many, they are a tough breed to find but that’s exactly what they need.”
