Benoit Badiashile has tendered a heart-felt apology to Chelsea fans after his error against Newcastle United on Tuesday.
The Blues fought back from a goal down to secure a place in the next round of the tournament, thanks to a late goal from Mykhailo Mudryk, who pounced on a poor clearance by Kieran Trippier to equalise for Chelsea, and send force the tie into a penalty shootout, which Mauricio Pochettino’s side eventually won 4-2.
Newcastle had taken the lead early in the first half through Callum Wilson, but it was Badiashile that gifted the forward the goal after an attempt to control a long ball with his left foot backfired, leaving the Newcastle man with no one but Djordje Petrovic to beat in the Chelsea goal.
The Frenchman was visibly devastated after the goal went in, and has now taken to his social media account to apologise to fans for the error.
Badiashile wrote on X: “Dear Blues, I would like to apologise for my mistake yesterday which fortunately had no consequences, I will work hard to ensure that this does not happen again.
“See you in the next round. Come on Blues.”
Badiashile will certainly have been overjoyed when Mudryk equalised for Chelsea in that game, because a lot of fans were so disappointed with him after the mistake that they seemed to be waiting for the final whistle to vent their anger at him via social media.
