Chelsea’s makeshift captain, Conor Gallagher has credited his teammates’ composure during the penalty shootout against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, to a rise in their confidence levels.

The Blues scored all four of their penalties after Mykhailo Mudryk equalised for Chelsea late on, to cruise into the last four of the tournament.

In contrast, Newcastle could only convert two of their spot kicks, with Kieran Trippier and Matt Ritchie both missing theirs.

“I think we felt confident,” Gallagher explained in a post-match interview.

“We were playing well in the game and everyone was confident on the ball. We fought right until the end to get the goal and everyone was confident taking their penalties coming from that performance.”

Gallagher added: “This will be great for the confidence. It’s definitely the best feeling we’ve had this season so everyone is really happy and excited to go into the next round. Of course, we are going to do everything we can to go through to the final now.”
