Newcastle United boss, Eddie Howe has revealed his disappointment, following his side’s elimination from this season’s Carabao Cup.

The Magpies were away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, as they aimed to qualify to the semi final of the competition for the second season in a row.

Things did look to be going their way, as they held on to a 1-0 lead that came through Callum Wilson in the first half, until a late Kieran Trippier error allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to pounce and score, and send the encounter to penalties.

Chelsea went on to win the shootout, with all their players burying their spot kicks, while Trippier fired his effort wide, and Matt Ritchie had his own shot saved by Djordje Petrovic.

While speaking at the end of the game, Howe expressed disappointment in the way they lost the game, although he acknowledged that his players did put in their best in the clash.

“It hurts a lot. It’s a very similar feeling to the end of the PSG game,” the Newcastle manager said.

“The lads had committed so much, gave everything and we led for so long. We’d defended really, really well but we didn’t get over the line. Whenever we concede we concede collectively not individually.

“I can’t praise the players enough. We tried to refocus and forget the last part of the game and the fact that we were in a shootout to try to get to the semi-final. Penalty shootouts are always a lottery and we didn’t quite win it then.”
