Mauricio Pochettino has given his backing to Reece James to always be involved in Chelsea’s matches as long as he’s fit — and irrespective of his form.
James recently returned from an injury for Chelsea, and has appeared to struggle in some of their games in the last month, particularly against Newcastle and Manchester United.
Pochettino however believes that his captain will get better if he continues to get game time.
“We are competing and want to win but what’s best for Reece is time and to give him game time,” said Pochettino at his Friday pre-match press conference.
“If not, it is difficult for him to be fit.”
Pochettino then added on the 23-year-old’s captaincy: “He is doing really well, I am really pleased with him. He is helping the club, his teammates and he is helping in every single decision that he is involved in.
“He is always positive and trying to give his best. But you need to remember for any captain, who is not playing because he is not fit or another problem, it is difficult to feel involved. But he is doing a fantastic job and I am so happy with him.”
