Alan Shearer was left criticising VAR for their involvement in the penalty that was awarded to Manchester United in the first half of their game against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
During the early exchanges, United were awarded a penalty after it was adjudged that Enzo Fernandez fouled Antony in the Chelsea box.
The decision came after centre referee, Chris Kavanagh was urged by VAR to go review the incident on the pitch-side monitor. The official had initially waved off the appeals from Man United players because he felt the foul that led to it was too soft, but changed his mind after seeing it.
While speaking about the incident on Amazon Prime Sport, Shearer said the intervention of VAR was uncalled for because the referee had initially made the right decision.
“We were like the referee originally. I certainly didn’t think [it was a penalty]. I know that you then slow it down,” the pundit said.
“What I would say is we were told it was going to be a very high bar and for the referee to make a clear and obvious error. If he gives that you say okay he’s not going to change his mind. But because he hadn’t give it, then I was surprised that VAR sent him to the screen. They can’t complain it’s on the top of the foot, but I’m not sure there’s enough to overturn that.”
Bruno Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty for Man United, but missed it; although, the Red Devils still won the game 2-1, with two goals from Scott McTominay, while Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea.
