Report: Why Chelsea’s £110k-a-week experienced star may not get a new contract

Football journalist, Simon Johnson has suggested that Thiago Silva may be leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Silva has been arguably Chelsea’s best player since he arrived from Paris Saint-Germain three years ago.

The 39-year-old has played in every Premier League game this season, even though he didn’t exactly enjoy a great outing when the Blues were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle United on Saturday.

Silva was at fault for Newcastle’s third goal after gifting the ball to Joelinton, who made no mistake in smashing it into Robert Sanchez’s net. The defender was also culpable for Anthony Gordon’s goal after doing little to close down the former Everton winger, as he cut inside and played a low shot to the left of the Chelsea post.

Silva is out of contract with Chelsea at the end of the current season, but there is little to suggest he will get an extension, according to Johnson, who told The Athletic: “It was just over a year ago that I asked him about his future before a game against AC Milan and there was a lot of talk from him and the club about wanting to renew. You are not hearing the same noises now and that’s significant.”

If the report is true, and Silva doesn’t get a new deal, it may have more to do with his age, and not because he was poor against Newcastle, after all, he’s been one of the best defenders around for the last two decades or so.
