Alan Shearer has claimed that it felt sad to watch Thiago Silva make the type of errors he made during Chelsea’s game against Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Blues were defeated 4-1 by Eddie Howe’s men, in what had been described as their worst game this season.
The entire team were not at their best, but some players were particularly off it on the occasion.
Reece James got sent off in the second half after picking up two unnecessary yellow cards, and is now set to miss the clash with Brighton on Sunday.
Silva, who is usually solid and aware, was also not at his best against the Magpies, making two very bad mistakes, with one leading to a goal in the second period.
Speaking about the performance on the Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said of the 39-year-old defender: “When you look at Thiago Silva, who has been a great of the game, and I know we all have poor games, but I thought it was a bit sad to see because he made two huge errors. One for one goal and one where he gave away a corner in the first half.
“I know how fit he is and how he hardly ever misses a game, but it felt tough for him yesterday [Saturday]. It wasn’t good to see, as it was someone who has been so great over the years.”
