Aston Villa managed a 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, despite being the underdogs ahead of the fixture.
It’s an evidence of the good work Unai Emery has done at the club since his appointment last year, with his side currently sitting fourth on the Premier League table after 13 games.
The Spaniard was quizzed about his side’s chances of securing Champions League football at the end of the season, given the progress they’re making under him, but he insisted they’re still not favourites for a top-four place, and named seven other clubs that are better than them, including Chelsea.
“There are seven team who are contenders more than us for the top seven positions, while we are there we are going to try to enjoy it and keep it,” Emery said.
“Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle.
“We can get confidence from wins like this. But it is still clear in my mind, we need balance. It’s 38 games, we have to show consistency.
“We are in a good position but not a contender but while we are there we have to try to keep it.
“We have to be happy, we have to enjoy and be demanding as well. Now we have to rest and think about Thursday and then Sunday against Bournemouth.”
Emery is clearly trying to be modest, and shield his team from any sort of pressure, because they have been playing very well, and could finish in the top four if they continue like that. Chelsea are currently 10th on the log, and will have to play much better than they did against Newcastle United on Saturday if they truly want to finish further up the table come the end of the season.
