Newcastle boss, Eddie Howe has said that his side’s 4-1 win against Chelsea on Saturday was a show of the character within the squad, and he claims it was well deserved.

The Magpies handed Chelsea their biggest defeat of the season at St. James’ Park, despite being without up to 11 of their key players.

Howe was delighted with his side’s performance, and singled out four names for praise, including Kieran Trippier, who rattled the Chelsea post with a free kick during the first half.

“It was a real statement of character within the squad,” said the Newcastle boss.

“We really asked the players to step up, and we really deserved to win. Big positives from today.

“The leaders within the group set the tone – Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Ritchie. They make sure we don’t surrender.”

Howe added on teenage midfielder Miley, who provided the assist for Alexander Isak’s 13th-minute opener: “The biggest compliment I can give him is the pass for the first goal – an incredible decision, and he has the right temperament.

“A lot of young players would have wanted to shoot there. We have high hopes for him.

“If you are disjointed and go away from your principles, you will be in trouble. We try to be us.”
