‘It was automatic’: Ricardo Carvalho reveals the Chelsea player that helped him out a lot

Chelsea great, Ricardo Carvalho has named John Terry as the player that he enjoyed working with a lot during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Carvalho moved to Chelsea from FC Porto after Jose Mourinho was appointed manager in 2004.

The Portuguese ex-footballer enjoyed a lot of success while playing for Chelsea, and was widely regarded as one of the best around at the time, but he has now appreciated Terry for making his work easier.

He told the official Chelsea website: “For me, as a defender, he was an example, because he grew up in England and I grew up in Portugal, with different ways of playing. Here the pace, the long balls, and everything, it was different, so I had to improve my game in those areas.

“I was talking to him from the beginning and after we enjoyed ourselves; we had a very good relationship together and we started to know each other quickly. Sometimes we didn’t even need to speak, it was just about looking at each other and I knew what he was going to do.

“He knew that I liked to cover, I knew that he liked to fight for the first balls, so it was automatic. Those are the kind of things you feel and it is difficult to explain in words.”
