Cole Palmer has become Chelsea’s designated penalty taker, following his transfer from Manchester City over the summer.

The 21-year-old has also surprisingly lived up to expectations since assuming that responsibility, with four goals from his last four strikes from the penalty spot.

Palmer’s latest penalty success came during the 4-4 Premier League draw with Manchester City on Sunday after he stepped up to convert and draw Chelsea level in the 95th minute after Armando Broja was clumsily fouled by Ruben Diaz.

The winger has been praised for his ability to keep a cool nerve in moments like that, especially against familiar faces like City, who he spent 15 years of his life with. He was also asked about his success from the penalty spot, to which he said he usually just goes with his guts.

“Long time waiting, but I felt confident. I’ve had a few penalties now. Just keep calm, 90-something minute, stay focussed and strike it,” Palmer said.

“I’m not going to say I work on them because I don’t, I trust in my natural ability and thankfully it went in.”
