Manchester United legend, Roy Keane has described Chelsea’s performance against Tottenham on Monday as ‘very very average’.
The Blues beat Spurs 4-1 away from home in what was the last game of the match week, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer (1) and Nicolas Jackson (3).
The home side scored first after just six minutes of play, and looked dangerous every time they had the ball, but Chelsea soon fought back, and earned a penalty in the 33rd minute after Enzo Fernandez was fouled by Cristian Romero.
Spurs also went down to 10 men immediately, with the Argentine getting a straight red card for the challenge, but more trouble was soon going to follow for Ange Potescoglu’s men.
Destiny Udogie received a second yellow card after chopping Raheem Sterling down in the 55th minute, meaning that Spurs were now down to nine men. But despite their numerical disadvantage, the North Londoners continued to trouble Chelsea until later in the 75th minute when Nicolas Jackson found the net to put the Blues ahead 2-1.
The Senegal international also netted two more times in added time to seal the victory in Mauricio Pochettino’s first game against his former team since he left them in 2019.
However, Keane insists the game wasn’t as entertaining as it’s been made out to seem, while claiming that Chelsea barely managed to win.
He told The Overlap’s Stick to Football show: “I didn’t really enjoy it. I thought there was too much going on, a couple of sending offs.
“I didn’t think the quality was that great in the game. Listen, I know Spurs were up against it, but I thought Chelsea were very, very average.
“But just the whole game, when there’s a couple of sending offs, it spoils the game for me. I know there’s plenty of talking points but sometimes you sit down and just want to watch a good game, a good quality game.
“So I just think too many stoppages, too much stuff going on, it just spoiled it for me that particular night. Generally speaking it’s great to have some talking points but to me there was just too much going on, too much madness.
“And ultimately the Spurs players were making some crazy decisions. The first 15 minutes they were fine but even afterwards I was disappointed with Chelsea.
“I know they scored late on and it looks a comfortable scoreline, but up until the last few minutes Spurs were still in with a chance. Generally speaking I just didn’t enjoy it, I thought there was a real lack of quality in the game.”
