Daniel Sturridge has criticised VAR’s decision not to allow Moises Caicedo’s strike against Tottenham during the first half stand.
Caicedo thought he’d given Chelsea an equaliser just around the half-hour mark, after he drilled a low shot into the Tottenham goal.
The effort was however ruled out by VAR after a lengthy check that resulted in them deciding that Nicolas Jackson was obstructing the view of the Spurs’ goalkeeper when the strike went in.
Chelsea eventually did get their equaliser through Cole Palmer, who stepped up to take a penalty after another VAR check found that Cristian Romero had fouled Enzo Fernandez inside the Tottenham box.
Nicolas Jackson would then go on to score a second-half hat-trick to steal the three points for the Blues, who had to work hard to get the win against a resilient Tottenham team.
Speaking about the Caicedo effort on Sky Sports, Sturridge said: “This one for me, it should’ve stood. When we’re talking about a shot from distance, the goalkeeper – I don’t think Jackson’s really blocked his view that bad. The distance between Jackson and the goalkeeper is quite big as well so I think this is a goal.
“Fortunately for Chelsea they did have the penalty opportunity anyway but they would’ve been devastated if that goal wouldn’t have stood and then they wouldn’t have got the pen.”
