Marc Cucurella has tendered an apology to Chelsea teammate, Raheem Sterling after failing to lay the ball for the forward to score on Monday night.
Chelsea beat Tottenham 4-1 away from Stamford Bridge in the last game of the Premier League matchday. It certainly was not the best performance from Mauricio Pochettino’s men, but they did get the win, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer (1) and Nicolas Jackson (3).
Sterling was one of Chelsea’s most creative outlets, and might have gotten on the scoresheet too if Cucurella didn’t choose to go for goal himself during a clear opening on one second-half occasion.
The Spaniard managed to beat Tottenham’s high defensive line after he was found with a perfect through ball, but when he got to the opposition goal, he opted to shoot with his weaker foot, failing to score, even though Sterling was standing free just meters away from him.
The decision clearly didn’t sit well with Sterling, who had worked hard all game, although Chelsea did get the win in the end, and Cucurella has now apologised for his poor choice.
The former Brighton left-back dropped a comment under Sterling’s post on Instagram after the game, and said he was ‘sorry’ for not passing the ball earlier.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are now 10th on the Premier League table, thanks to the massive win, and must now prepare to do the same when they meet leaders, Manchester City at the weekend.
