Tottenham boss, Ange Potescoglu has bemoaned the use of VAR in football matches after his side saw two goals disallowed against Chelsea on Monday night.
The Australian and his rejuvenated Tottenham side were unbeaten ahead of the game, but that record was shattered as the Blues ran out 4-1 winners by the time the final whistle was blown.
However, Spurs had two red cards during the game, meaning they had to finish with nine men. They also had two goals from Heung-min Son and Nathan Dier ruled out for offside on either side of the break. Chelsea, on the other hand, saw a goal from Raheem Sterling and Moises Caicedo chopped off for similar reasons, and while speaking after full-time, Potescoglu bemoaned the role VAR played in delaying the game on many occasions.
“There was a fair bit going on, a lot of VAR intervention, a hard game for me to analyse but I am very proud of the players. Right to the end they were trying to create something for us,” said the Australian.
“The players couldn’t give any more than they did, part of this game is will, effort and determination and they showed that.”
On the VAR decisions that took place during the game, and the delays that followed, Potescoglu added: “I don’t like it, it is the way the game is going. Some of it is self inflicted because if we come out every week complaining about decision that is what will happen, every decision gets forensically checked and we will be sitting around for a long time in every game trying to figure out what is going on.
“I don’t like it but I am probably in the wilderness with that because I keep getting told that’s where we want to go. I am too old school, I’ll respect the referee’s decision right or wrong. But it is the way the game is going.”
