Former Chelsea midfielder, Danny Drinkwater has looked back on his Chelsea career, admitting that it wasn’t everything he wanted it to be.

The 33-year-old recently appeared on Jake Humphrey’s High Performance podcast, where he talked about his stay at Stamford Bridge and the events that transpired on the day he moved to the London club.

According to Drinkwater, his first day at Chelsea didn’t start off as expected, and that might have rubbed off on the rest of his five-year stay at the club.

He said: “As a whole it was obviously garbage but if you break it down I had some unbelievable times there. Not unbelievable but really good. The first day was madness.

“It was left Leicester, deal hadn’t been done, and from what I know I don’t think Leicester planned to get it done. Drove down there with my agent and a few other people, was in a hotel for the majority of the day, and then we got an extension on the deadline because it wasn’t done in the time.

“I remember Michael [the director of football at Chelsea], it was like 1am in the morning, was shouting down the corridor ‘let’s get this deal done’ and all this and I’m sat there thinking ‘what’s going on?’”

Despite achieving some success at Leicester, where he won the Premier League, Drinkwater struggled to fit into Chelsea’s style of play for reasons that remain unclear, and had to be shipped out on loan for the following seasons until his departure last year.

He has now announced that he is now done with the sport.
