Mauricio Pochettino has offered an apology to Brentford after his assistant, Jesus Perez was sent off during the clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Blues were defeated 2-0 by their London rivals, despite dominating for large spells of the game.
Ethan Pinnock headed Brentford in front in the 58th minute, after Axel Disasi was caught ball-watching. Bryan Mbeumo then made it 2-0 for the Bees, finishing into an empty net after Robert Sanchez went upfield to assist Chelsea with a corner.
With Chelsea down 1-0, and in search of an equaliser, Perez strayed into the Brentford corner in a bid to try and get the ball for his side for a throw-in, but it didn’t go down well with Thomas Frank’s men, and an argument followed, leading to Perez getting sent off.
After the game, Pochettino was asked about the incident, and the Argentine immediately offered an apology on behalf of his assistant, as he explained what happened.
“Yeah, because in the rules he cannot go to the [other team’s technical area],” Poch said.
“We apologise to Brentford and apologise to the referee because he wanted to take the ball in front of Brentford. Nothing more than this.
“It’s normal. They said, ‘What are you doing here?’ and he said, ‘I want to take the ball’. That’s it. Nothing more.”
