Football journalist, Liam Twomey of The Athletic has shared a different perspective to the viral incident that happened between Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling during Saturday’s 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Arsenal.
The pair had a little argument over penalty duties after Chelsea were handed a spot-kick, as a result of William Saliba’s handball offence. It took Enzo Fernandez stepping into the situation for Sterling to allow Palmer take the penalty, and many have been of the opinion that the 28-year-old had wanted to take the penalty ahead of Palmer.
However, Twomey has shared his own view of the situation, and according to him, while Sterling did argue about penalty duties with Palmer, he didn’t want to take the spot-kick himself, and instead, wanted to hand it to Enzo— which would explain why he let the matter slide after the Argentine stepped in.
Twomey wrote for the Athletic: “My read of the exchange before that spot kick is this: Sterling tried to take the ball off him, not to assume responsibility himself, but to give it to Fernandez, who then made it clear that Palmer should take it.”
