Liverpool great, Jamie Carragher has criticised the penalty disagreement that took place during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal over the weekend.

The Blues were dominant against their London rivals, and deservedly took a 2-0 lead, which looked like it would be their first win over the Gunners in four attempts. However, a late drop in concentration would turn around and haunt them, as Mikel Arteta’s men fought back to earn a draw at Stamford Bridge.

It was a match that had some memorable moments, but for some, the one that stood apart the most was the incident in the first half that saw Chelsea stars, Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling arguing over who would take the Blues spot kick, which came after William Saliba was penalised for handling the ball in his own 18-yard box.

As Palmer prepared to take the penalty, Sterling could be seen urging the youngster to allow him take it, but the summer signing wasn’t having any of it, and it took Enzo Fernandez intervening before Sterling agreed to allow Palmer take the penalty.

Some pundits have since spoken up against the incident, including Carragher, who believes there should be a designated penalty taker in every football team. The former Liverpool defender also praised Enzo for showing good leadership quality in quelling the situation.

Speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, he said: “I don’t really like that [players arguing for a penalty]. I think people should know before the game who the penalty taker is. But what I did like was the authority shown by Enzo Fernandez.

“For a young player, he is saying to a seasoned professional in Raheem Sterling that Cole Palmer is taking it, in almost that cool manner. It was almost captain-like or someone in their early 30’s. It was really interesting and it was good to see Cole Palmer score to go along with his performance.”
