Arsenal great, Ian Wright was full of praise for Enzo Fernandez after the Argentine stepped in to resolve the minor penalty dispute between Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer in the 2-2 draw against the Gunners on Saturday.
The referee pointed to the spot after Mykhailo Mudryk’s goal-bound header was blocked with the arm by William Saliba. Palmer stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but Sterling insisted he should be the one to take it.
The situation went on for a few seconds until Enzo and another Chelsea teammate stepped in to ask Sterling to give the ball to Palmer, and the former Manchester City forward listened.
Speaking with Premier League Productions, Wright praised Enzo for handling the situation, and Sterling for not taking it to heart, as he later went to celebrate with Palmer after he scored the penalty.
“I like that from Palmer but I like the fact that the team came round to say, ‘let him do it’,” he said.
“Raheem took it, he went over to celebrate with him [Palmer].
“The thing is, Raheem looked a little bit disappointed at first but then Fernandez came and said something, someone else came over and said something, and it’s done.
“They scored a penalty and everyone celebrated together. It’s not a bad thing.”
Ex-Netherlands International, Ruud Gullit added: “It’s good for Palmer, he is the striker, he wants to score goals.
“He is eager to take it, I like that. That’s what you need from a striker, it’s a positive from him.”
