Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has suggested the club could sell Victor Osimhen after observing a ‘mood change’ on the part of the player.
Osimhen has drawn interest from several clubs in and outside Europe over the last few months after his brilliant performance for the Naples club last season.
The Nigerian was heavily instrumental to Napoli, securing their first Scudetto in decades last term, as he netted 31 goals from just 39 matches.
De Laurentiis had been hopeful of getting the striker to sign an extension after holding talks over the last few months, but it now seems like things have taken a different direction.
Osimhen is believed to be unhappy with his club over the way he was mocked recently, following a penalty miss, and could be stalling on signing a new deal.
De Laurentiis however, appears to be unbothered by development, as he insists they will have no hesitations selling the player if he doesn’t want to stay.
“I have never been unhappy towards Osimhen, but there are always two of us in these things,” said the 74-year-old.
“I have remained the same, if his mood has changed [over a new deal] I can’t do anything about it.
“If things change after a handshake, it’s disappointing, we take note of it but then life goes on.
“There are excellent relations with him, the contract expires in 2025, there is time. Don’t forget that I sold Koulibaly [to Chelsea] a year before his contract expired.”
Meanwhile, Napoli have now issued a statement denying that De Laurentiis said anything negative about Osimhen, as they insist things are great between the club and the striker.
“President De Laurentiis never shared any negative comment about Victor,” Napoli said. ‘He just said that after verbally agreeing on plan to sign new deal, Osimhen changed his mind.
“We hope it’s just stand-by moment to think about it. In the next weeks we will discuss with his agent [Roberto] Calenda about the future.
“Reports of a tense situation between Napoli and Osimhen are 100% wide of the mark.”
