Chelsea have moved to extend Ian Maatsen’s contract by one more year.
The Dutchman’s Chelsea contract was due to end next June, but the Blues want to keep him at Stamford Bridge, amid interest from other clubs.
According to a report by the Evening Standard, Chelsea recently offered Maatsen an improved contract offer twice, but the left-back turned them both down.
It is believed that his lack of enough playing time may have led to his behaviour, although the report also adds that Chelsea have already decided to trigger the 12-month extension clause in his current deal.
Maatsen was wanted by other clubs during the summer, but he opted to stay and fight for a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
After playing just 83 minutes of league football this season, Maatsen may be considering leaving Chelsea, with both Manchester City and Barcelona said to be interested in the player.
