‘He has problems’ – Club chief explains why Chelsea striker is struggling

David Datro Fofana has struggled to score goals since he moved to Union Berlin on loan during the summer.

The Chelsea striker, who was signed from Norwegian club, Molde in January couldn’t exactly nail a regular spot in the Blues starting XI, and had to be shipped out to afford him more regular minutes.

It’s been months since Fofana joined Berlin however, and things are not going quite as expected for the Ivorian. In nine Bundesliga matches for the club so far, the 20-year-old has failed to find the net— a worrying development, although Berlin sporting director, Oliver Ruhnert believes the overall performance of the team has rubbed off on the forward.

“Changing the [bad] results is not that easy for a young player,” Ruhnert said.

“He also had private problems at times. A little something came together. He also lacks a bit of goal to give him self-confidence.”

Berlin have lost their last seven matches. It’s hard for a striker to play well under such circumstances. So it may be unfair to expect Fofana to thrive when the confidence in the team is at bottom level.
