Levi Colwill appears to have made an impression on Gareth Southgate after playing for England during their 1-0 win against Australia on Friday night.

The Chelsea centre-back, who has had to play as a left-back in recent games, following the injury to Ben Chilwell, played in the same position for his country, and was solid throughout.

Reacting to questions from the press after the game, Southgate explained the reason he played the youngster out of his natural position.

He said: “Levi [Colwill] is a young defender, we know he is not a left back as his first choice.

“But he is filling that spot for his club and we wanted players where they play for their clubs, so it is as smooth as they could be.”

Colwill is one of two Chelsea players that were in action for England on Friday, with the other being Conor Gallagher, although the midfielder was taken off later in the second half.
