Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has revealed he wants Chelsea right-back Reece James to be made Chelsea captain.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will have to appoint a captain following the exit of Cesar Azpilicueta this summer.

Chalobah said: “Being captain is a massive thing for Chelsea. Reece has his desires and hopefully he does get it. He constantly shows his qualities on the pitch, and he is a leader.”

Chalobah played alongside another product of Cobham, Bashir Humphreys in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on Thursday morning.

The centre-back was on loan at German side SC Paderborn last term and has improved vastly.

“It is another step and experience for Bash which he coped with very well,” Chalobah added. “I try to help him a lot with my experience of playing in his position the past two years. I have been trying to make him feel comfortable and ready to play.

“Communication is key. Trying to be positive no matter the situation. Like if he does a mistake, I think it is good for the young players to hear someone being positive next to them, and that’s what I did.

“At the end of the day, we’re on the same team and doing the same job.”

Chalobah completed his first full match of pre-season in the game against Newcastle United.

“It was good to get my first 90 minutes. We’re three games in now, feeling good,” Chalobah said.

The game against Newcastle United was played at the spectacular Mercedes-Benz Stadium which had a roof on, with temperatures inside much cooler than outside.

“It didn’t impact us. I didn’t think about it, although it was much cooler and much better to play. The fans were great and it was a massive crowd with us tonight,” Chalobah added.

“Back to Philly now, and then onto Washington DC!”
