Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has admitted he is surprised Arsenal paid £65million to sign Kai Havertz from Chelsea this summer.
Havertz has signed a five-year year contract with Arsenal after swapping Stamford Bridge for the Emirates Stadium.
The 24-year-old spent three seasons at Chelsea, scoring 19 goals in 91 league games and netting the winner in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City.
Souness insists he was surprised by Arsenal’s move for Havertz and says Chelsea’s poor form last term does not excuse his underwhelming performances.
“I don’t think anyone would have spent £65m for Kai Havertz based on what we’ve seen from him over the last couple of years at Chelsea,” Souness told the Sky Bet Fan Hope Survey.
“Mikel Arteta must feel that he can improve Havertz because he wasn’t a £65m player last year.
“Maybe I’m being tough on him because he was in a struggling Chelsea team, but good players still turn up whether their team is struggling or not.”
