Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on Joao Felix’s situation at Chelsea and will reportedly make a move for the Portugal international if they secure Champions League football.

Felix joined Chelsea on loan from Atletico Madrid in January, with the 23-year-old netting three times in the Premier League and generally impressing with his all-round play.

Chelsea are open to signing Felix permanently in the summer but are not willing to pay the €100million (£87m) that Atletico Madrid are demanding for the transfer.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Newcastle are serious contenders for Felix’s signature but they will need to qualify for the Champions League to stand any chance.

Felix is keen to play in Europe’s premier club competition next season and would consider a move to St James’ Park if they secure Champions League football.
