CBS Sport journalist Ben Jacobs has described the expected appointment of Frank Lampard as caretaker boss until the end of the season as a popular appointment among Chelsea fans.

The iconic former Chelsea midfielder replaced Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea boss in 2019 before he was sacked by previous owner Roman Abramovich in January 2021, with Thomas Tuchel his replacement.

Jacobs tweeted: “Frank Lampard to Chelsea makes a lot of sense. Popular appointment with most fans, buys time to undertake a proper recruitment process, relieves Bruno Saltor from an uncomfortable position and changes mood at Cobham.

“Big chance for Lampard to manufacture a Champions League fairy tale, and Chelsea caretakers do have a knack of succeeding.”

Lampard has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in January and was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to watch Chelsea draw 0-0 with Liverpool.
