The Premier League have asked referees to allow Muslim players to break their fast during matches over Ramadan, according to The Athletic.

Players of the Islamic faith will be fasting in daylight hours during Ramadan — which will be for a month from March 21/22 and ends with the celebration of Eid — and are allowed to eat and drink again once the sun sets.

Premier League referees have now being asked to use natural stoppages in play to allow Muslim players to take on water or energy gels during evening games over the coming month.

Referees have been asked to liaise with clubs before kick-off to identify which players will require such a stoppage.

Chelsea’s Muslim players include N’Golo Kante and Wesley Fofana.
