REVEALED: Chelsea’s biggest weakness since winning the league under Conte. Even Tuchel couldn’t correct it

Everton striker Ellis Simms came off the bench to score an 89th minute equaliser as Everton drew 2-2 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

According to The Athletic, Simms is the fifth opposition player since the beginning of last season to score a very late equaliser at Stamford Bridge in the league, emulating the achievement of Casemiro, Harry Kane, Conor Coady and Danny Welbeck before him.

All of the scorers mentioned found the net in the 89th minute or later and all of their goals ultimately turned three Premier League points into one for Chelsea.

According to Opta, since the start of the 2017-18 season, Chelsea’s win percentage of 76 per cent in Premier League matches when taking the lead at any stage of a game is the lowest of all the Premier League’s traditional ‘Big Six’ clubs.

In the same period, Arsenal have won 79 percent of matches they have taken the lead despite the early struggles when Mikel Arteta became Arsenal boss.

Liverpool have won 85 percent of games in which they have taken the lead, Manchester City have won 89 percent of games in which they have taken the lead, Manchester United have won 81 percent while Tottenham Hotspur have won 79 percent.

The last time Chelsea were good at holding on to leads was in the title winning season of 2016-17 under Antonio Conte. Chelsea took the lead in 30 games that season and won 88 percent of the games in which we took the lead.

Chelsea haven’t maintained that standard ever since. The only subsequent season in which they have taken the lead in 30 or more league games is 2021-22, Thomas Tuchel’s lone full campaign as head coach. However, Chelsea only won 70 percent of the games in which we took the lead, according to The Athletic.

This season, it’s gotten worse as Chelsea have won just 63 percent of games in which we have taken the lead. Chelsea have taken the lead in 16 Premier League games this season, winning just 10, drawing 5 and losing once.
