Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta had to be taken off during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
Azpilicueta suffered a nasty head injury after he was hit by a high boot as he challenged for the ball with Sekou Mara.
Chelsea boss Graham Potter has since provided an update on the player, revealing he is awake and in the hospital.
Potter told Sky Sports: “He is conscious, he is in hospital.
“We are monitoring and are very concerned for him but he is in the best place for him with the hospital. It was a horrible incident.
“I think he was unconscious at one point so it was worrying for everyone. It was accidental but still it was a kick in the face and you can see how bad it was.”
