Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has described Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez as an expensive gamble.
Chelsea smashed the British transfer record to sign Fernandez from Benfica in a deal worth £107million.
Gallas told Genting Casino: “Enzo Fernandez is an expensive gamble in my opinion, even if he had a great World Cup and is very young.
“Look at how he was playing with Argentina. He played like a really experienced player.
“He definitely has the talent and everybody can see that. But it is his first time in the Premier League.
“Nobody knows how he’s going to adapt. Is he going to live up to the level that everyone expects him to be?
“Sometimes we see clubs just buy players who haven’t proved themselves.
“Nowadays in football after one season, your value can increase. From a club’s standpoint, I think a club should wait to put that price on someone just to be sure.
“Once you’ve bought that player for over £100m, you need to win trophies with that player in the following years.
“Once you want to sell him, you have to sell him for more than you bought him for. When that doesn’t happen, it becomes a problem.”
