According to transfer expert Ben Jacobs, Benfica believe Chelsea’s offer for World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez is too strong to turn down.

The Blues are keen on signing the 21 year old Argentina midfielder in January. Chelsea are reportedly hoping to pay more than the €120m release clause and gain preferable payment terms by doing so.

Jacobs tweeted: “Negotiations continue between Benfica and Chelsea.

“Chelsea hoping to pay more than the €120m release clause and gain preferable payment terms by doing so. They have player buy in.

“Benfica prepared to engage due to a feeling Chelsea’s offer might be too strong to turn down.

“But there are still senior members at the club still adamant they want to keep Fernandez until the end of the season, especially with Champions League knockout football to come.

“Chelsea are pushing as hard, and moving as quick, as they can. All about Benfica’s reply now.

“Situation is fluid with Chelsea looking at all options to try and get it done. But they prefer not to pay release clause.

“Be interesting to see if Benfica insisted on this or walking away what Chelsea do. But right now talks are about other structures, which is seen as encouraging.”
