Chelsea have been told by German club RB Leipzig that the Blues must pay a world-record fee for a defender to sign Croatian international Josko Gvardiol.

Chelsea tried to sign the RB Leipzig centre-back in the summer but a move failed to materialise and the Blues remain keen on signing him in January.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano told GiveMeSport: “Now, Leipzig want way more than €90million. They hope to go for more than €100million to make Gvardiol the most expensive centre-back ever.

“Chelsea are still working on it. They are still in contact with people close to the player and Leipzig.”

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich chief Hasan Salihamidzic has revealed the German side won’t be competing with Chelsea for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Salihamidzic told Sky Germany: “We have good coverage in the centre-back positions with Matthijs de Ligt, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernández, three top players.

“We also have Josip Stanišić who has to make appearances.

“Therefore, we do not plan to sign another centre-back…”
