Spanish side Real Madrid are reportedly ready to battle Chelsea for the transfer of RB Leipzig defender and Croatian international Josko Gvardiol.

According to Marca, Real Madrid have discussed signing Gvardiol for a long time and could push for a deal to be done for the defender.

Gvardiol is considered one of the brightest prospects in world football, after an impressive 18 months at German side RB Leipzig since joining from Dinamo Zagreb in his homeland.

The 20 year old defender was one of the stars of the World Cup, playing a key role as Croatia came third in the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s transfer pursuit of Gvardiol has taken a significant turn following the reveal of a €110million (£96million) release clause in the 20-year-old’s contract that will become active in 2024.

As confirmed by Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenburg following an initial report from Yvonne Gabriel, Gvardiol will see a €110million (£96million) release clause in his contract become active in 2024.
