Roy Keane believes Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech looks like ‘a different player’ for Morocco at the World Cup.
Ziyech started just two games for Chelsea before the World Cup break but in Qatar the winger has been a key figure for Morocco and has helped his nation reach the World Cup semi-finals.
“Morocco have been tenacious, strong, and aggressive this tournament, sitting deep but doing well when they have the ball. They have been brilliant, and I didn’t see it coming,” Keane told Sky Bet.
“Hakim Ziyech seems like a different player – it’s a different environment, sometimes players struggle at club level, but the World Cup and international football can suit other personalities better.
“Ziyech looks like a big personality for Morocco, and you don’t see that at club level for Chelsea.”
Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has also praised Ziyech following his impressive performances at the World Cup.
“Well I can’t judge [axed Spain boss] Luis Enrique nor can I judge or assess your head coach [Regragui],” Van Gaal said.
“But I can answer the other question by talking about Ziyech for instance. He was of course trained in the Netherlands and Ziyech is a wonderful player.
“He makes an enormous contribution to the Moroccan squad and before this new head coach came in he wasn’t being played, so that says something about the head coach.
“I think it’s great that Morocco has advanced in the World Cup because Morocco is not known for being a top football country.
“But in general if we look at the Moroccan players in our league [Eredivisie], usually they are technically very skilled and I think it’s always a pleasure to watch them play football.”
