Chelsea tried to sign Ajax midfielder and Mexico international Edson Alvarez in the summer but a move failed to materialise.
Ajax had already sanctioned the departure of a number of key players and they wanted to hold on to the Mexican international during the summer transfer window.
The 25-year-old has not given up on his desire to join the Blues, and he is waiting for Chelsea to come back with an offer for him in January.
Simon Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m told there’s still tentative interest from Chelsea’s side in Alvarez. Obviously, they tried to sign him on deadline day in the summer. He was very keen to go. It looked at one point Ajax would accept our offer, but they didn’t in the end.
“They didn’t want to let him go that close to the deadline and they couldn’t replace him, so they told him he had to stay. He was disappointed by it and he’s waiting and expecting Chelsea to come back in for him again in January.”
Alvarez has previously revealed his regret at not joining Chelsea during the summer transfer window.
Reflecting on seeing his dream crushed, Alvarez told ESPN: “As a player you are aware that this would change everything.
“A better league, a better life for you and for your family. This is what it’s all about for me. I am here for my love for football but also for my family.
“I am very disappointed about it. But I am convinced that one day another big club will come for me. This winter, or in the summer. For now I can only focus on Ajax.”
