Nigel de Jong has hit out at Portugal for being ‘really complacent’ after they were knocked out of the World Cup by underdogs Morocco on Saturday.
Morocco upset the odds to beat Portugal and reach the World Cup semi-finals and will play defending champions France for a place in the final.
“They had a couple of chances, there was a good one for [Goncalo] Ramos. This was not the Ramos we saw in the win over Switzerland,” De Jong said on ITV.
“[Bruno] Fernandes had a chance on the edge on the box. There was resilience from Morocco, because every time Portugal went to pull the trigger they were on them, making it difficult. They closed down all the time.
“Portugal had the qualities but I think they were really complacent. Maybe they were thinking in a light way about Morocco. The approach was not the same approach as what we saw against Switzerland, the high energy, high octane approach.”
